HELP FOR A TRAUMATISED PEOPLE
In a country of 12 million people, an estimated 380,000 have lost their lives to a relentless armed conflict that started in 2013. The people of Sudan are a traumatised generation. And they seem to have been forgotten by the rest of the world.
Project partner of ACN, Bishop Macram Max Gassis of El Obeid Diocese which is home to 200,000 refugees says “nobody really cares about Sudan”.
Sudan, an Islamic republic under the dictatorship of Umar al-Bashir who has been head of state since 1989 has seen all colours of ethnic displacement, human rights violations and war crimes. Although there have been countless peace talks and agreements, the situation seems to get worse.
Many Christians have suffered brutally. Churches have been forced to close and missionaries have been expelled. About a third of the country’s population have been driven from their homes.
In Riimenze, for instance, almost 8,000 people have taken sanctuary in a Catholic churchyard, their number is still growing. Some 70,000 farmers forced out of their villages have relocated to a forest in Mabia where they live in a fog from lack of food, with no protection from even the rain. Many children have died of malnutrition and the ones who have made it this far all suffer from fever, diarrhoea and other chronic diseases.
