{"id":34667,"date":"2019-12-03T15:51:45","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T15:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acnmalta.org\/?p=34667"},"modified":"2019-12-03T15:51:45","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T15:51:45","slug":"mideast-catholic-leaders-call-for-peace-stability-in-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acnmalta.org\/_oldsite\/2019\/12\/03\/mideast-catholic-leaders-call-for-peace-stability-in-region\/","title":{"rendered":"MIDEAST CATHOLIC LEADERS CALL FOR PEACE, STABILITY IN REGION"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amid deadly protests in Iraq, uprising in Lebanon and continued suffering in Syria, Catholic leaders of the Middle East called upon officials of their homelands to \u201censure safety, peace, tranquillity and stability for their citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meeting in Cairo November 25-29, the Council of Catholic Patriarchs of the East addressed political, economic and social difficulties that many countries are suffering as a result of unrest, violence, extremism and terrorism as well as the situation of displaced people and the inevitability of returning to their villages and homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In their final statement, the patriarchs called on the political authority in Iraq \u201cto take courageous action to get the country out of this great crisis so that the bloodshed will stop and life will return to normal by building a strong state on sound foundations, in which true democracy, justice and human dignity prevails, combating corruption.\u201d They also called for \u201crevealing who killed and kidnapped peaceful demonstrators\u201d and asked authorities to hand the killers \u201cover to the judiciary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The patriarchs appealed to all to work to \u201cuproot the terrorist ideology of the Islamic State.\u201d While acknowledging the \u201cadversity and tribulation\u201d in Iraq, the patriarchs encouraged Iraqi Christians \u201cto take root in their land and preserve the heritage\u201d of their ancestors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Turning to Lebanon, the patriarchs said they \u201csupport the demands of the Lebanese people in general and the youth in particular, in their movement,\u201d expressing their hope that peace and patriotism be maintained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The patriarchs also stressed the need for the return of refugees and displaced persons to their homelands. Lebanon is host to some 1 million Syrian refugees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While council members said they \u201care optimistic about the stability achieved in Syria in most of the country,\u201d they expressed their pain regarding human suffering and damage caused by bombings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The council expressed \u201cfull support for the Palestinian people tormented by the occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe reiterate our call on the international community to recognize the Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital, within the framework of the two states, and the return of Palestinian refugees to their homes,\u201d the patriarchs said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for Egypt, the Catholic leaders commended the Egyptian state\u2019s achievements \u201cthat have contributed effectively to improving the situation of Egyptians\u201d at all levels, including \u201cpractical steps\u201d in consolidating the foundations of citizenship and society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the meeting, the patriarchs met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and urged him to work toward reconciliation and dialogue in the countries of the Middle East, especially in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They also met with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amid deadly protests in Iraq, uprising in Lebanon and continued suffering in Syria, Catholic leaders of the Middle East called upon officials of their homelands to \u201censure safety, peace, tranquillity and stability for their citizens.\u201d Meeting in Cairo November 25-29, the Council of Catholic Patriarchs of the East addressed political, economic and social difficulties that&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":34668,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-34667","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-e-newsletters"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.2 -
